This bow was built to last, and it really packs a punch.
The Hoyt Buffalo Recurve Take-down bow (Fred Eichler’s signature series) is a hunter’s dream. This is what you would buy if you were looking for the best possible performance, accuracy and comfort. This is what the pro’s and champs use when hunting for deer, elk or bear. No matter your prey, the Buffalo will keep up. You’ve probably heard nothing but good things about Hoyt and there really is a reason why their hunting bows are probably the most popular in the world.
True Olympic Quality
The main reason this recurve bow is so excellent is that Hoyt has taken it’s highest quality olympic bow and adapted it for hunting purposes. Owning the Buffalo means that you will have the finest piece of equipment in the recurve hunting department available on the market.

Assembly & Tuning – Elegant Solutions
Even if you’ve never worked with a take-down bow before, you’ll find it exceptionally easy to assemble the Hoyt Buffalo. There are no tools required and everything can be done entirely by hand (just follow the simple instruction booklet).
This recurve bow makes it also possible for you to manually adjust both draw weight / tillering (the evenness of limb bending). Everything you need is described in the manual. By adjusting these you can fine-tune the bow to your particular shooting style, which will help you enhance accuracy and comfort.
Hoyt Buffalo Riser – Durable & Light
19″ and made of aluminum, with cut-past center arrow shelf. The design makes it wonderfully comfortable to grip, and thanks to Hoyt’s patented Paralever Limb Connection system (the same one used in their Olympic recurves), the whole bow construction is very sturdy and durable despite it being a take-down recurve. String groove silencers are also a part of the riser.
The Limbs – a Power House
The core is made from maple wood, surrounded with carbon. This is a particularly strong combination of materials used only in the highest quality recurve hunting bows. You’ll feel the difference immediately as you shoot your first arrow and see how smoothly and quickly it travels through the air. The tips are reinforced to allow for the attachment of the most effective strings (the hand made Flemish is one of them and it is included with the bow). See the video below for a demonstration of the Hoyt Buffalo bow in action:
The Buffalo String
As mentioned earlier, the Hoyt Buffalo recurve comes with it’s own custom-made Flemish string; pretty much the finest product in the industry for a hunter. The string comes with silencers too, which means you won’t need to spend more money and time to get your bow into perfect hunting condition.
Performace, Drawing, Accuracy – The Important Stuff
This bow was designed exclusively for hunters, although of course there is no reason why you wouldn’t be able to use it for target practice. The finish of the Hoyt Buffalo makes it very durable and resistant to all sorts of weather conditions – be it rain or snow, you can remain in the field.
If you aren’t sure what kind of draw weight is right for you, check out my Recurve Bow Draw Weight Chart to settle this matter.
It’s likely the most accurate recurve bow you will ever use, and its energy output is outstanding – the riser, limbs and string work in perfect harmony to transfer almost 100% of the energy to the arrow, with very little residual energy. Most people who have used it, including myself, find that it is exceptionally easy to draw; even if you were to get the 55 lbs. draw weight version, it won’t feel like it to your muscles. The string draws smoothly and with very little stacking (stacking refers to the draw weight increasing at a very rapid rate past a certain point).
Here’s a nice review from an archer who bought the Hoyt Buffalo – short but descriptive:
The bow shoots as advertised. Fast, quiet, easy to be accurate …… It just feels right in the hand.
And here’s another one:
Hoyt has built the best bow to date! Twelve arrows in 6″ group at 40 yards on my first attempt with this bow! (…) The Buffalo is an absolute wonder to shoot and the accuracy is incredible
What Can You Hunt With The Hoyt Buffalo?
You can hunt pretty much anything you want. The Buffalo was used by the most experienced hunters in the world to take down even the most dangerous game, including the grizzly bear. Please refer to our guide: how much draw weight do I need? It will quickly explain to you what poundage is most suitable for which purposes. The bow is compact enough that you can maneuver it very easily no matter how tight the spot.

Hi,
I was wondering where you ordered you Buffalo from. The Hoyt website states that you can only get it from a retailer. Did you order your from a retailer and have it shipped?
Great site by the way. Very helpful.
